I searched far and wide for a good gym in Marin County. I tried all of the usual overcrowded and dirty mega-gyms with their long- term contracts and broken equipment.I almost gave up when I found, by accident, the perfect gym. I have worked out in dozens of gyms in several states and I enjoy the time I spend at Kentfield Fitness. It is the cleanest and most professionally staffed and maintained gym I could find. A hidden gem in Central Marin County.

…I am having the best workouts, and as I told Christine (Hallinan) today, since I began my workouts at KF and along with some dieting, I have lost 12 lbs during the first three months, and I have gained more flexibility and energy. And the gym’s vibe is so friendly and easy going, although the sessions at times can be intense.
I found my way through the doors of Kentfield Fitness by accident. I was meeting a personal trainer, who I hired to work with my fiance’ as a birthday gift. I had driven by numerous time throughout the years, never giving a second glance as I had my membership at McGym down the street. Upon looking around, I found the set up to be like no other gym I had seen. The atmosphere is more like a home than a gym, with a relaxed feel you just can’t replicate in a larger setting. The layout of the gym allows ample space to find your niche and stay focused. In addition, they have the latest in fitness gear, so I am never bored and have access to try new things to keep my fitness routine fresh. On the subject of freshness, you won’t find a cleaner gym in the Bay Area, which has allowed for greater peace of mind in sharing the equipment.
The staff at Kentfield Fitness is attentive, friendly and eager to help you meet your fitness goals. What I appreciate about the training atmosphere, is the camaraderie between the staff, the trainers and other gym members. I have had personal experience with other trainers approaching me to show me new exercises or correct my form, even though it was not their obligation to do so, rather their passion for what they do.
If you are looking to break away from the chain gym scene, or just want to add some variety to your workouts, I highly recommend giving Kentfield Fitness a try.

For many years I resisted joining a gym because I felt most were dark, loud crowded places that catered to bodybuilder and aerobics fanatics. Thankfully Kentfield Fitness is the antithesis of that. Kentfield Fitness’ bright and airy space is filled with the major equipment and amenities one would expect without any of the waiting or pressure associated with other gyms.The large windows let in plenty of natural light while providing views of the passersby on one side and Mt. Tam on the other which make make my time on the cardio machines go more quickly. The friendly staff is equally welcoming to all members which range in age from teenagers to senior citizens. It is motivating for me to workout alongside people of various fitness levels.Kentfield Fitness’ casual and supportive environment is what attracted me 18 months ago and it is what keeps me coming back 5 days a week.

Kentfield Fitness is a great neighborhood gym. The equipment is up to date and you never have a problem getting a machine. The staff is professional and friendly and it is a great environment to work out in. They offer many classes and their boot camp class is great! If you want a friendly, efficient gym Kentfield Fitness is perfect.
My husband and I spent several weeks looking for the right gym after moving back to the area. We were very disappointed with what we found. The gyms seem to fall into two camps: a) the overpriced, oversubscribed gyms that appear to have lots of classes and equipment but also lots of attitude and cost or b) the chain gyms were you could get a very low monthly cost but they too were oversubscribed, overused and were more focused more on signing up a contract than really servicing a potential client. Then we stumbled onto Kentfield Fitness and it was a perfect fit for us. Kentfield is a lovely, well cared for gym that really caters to all ages and clientele. It has a very intimate, neighborhood feel and the staff are all warm and friendly. The owner, Chris, worked closely with us to get us the right trainers that meet our needs. The gym is always open, never seriously crowded and everything is kept neat, clean and in good working condition. They are willing to work with you in whatever way best fits your needs and are not constrained to complex contract arrangements. In the time we have been at the gym, both of us have seen our fitness improve and have really, really enjoyed the experience. If you’re looking for a gym that is easy to join, nice to be in and has great people to meet, I highly recommend Kentfield Fitness.

I have been to many gyms, but not like this one. The gym is the perfect size for someone who wants to be able to use the machinery, ask questions if they are unsure about machines or classes and who is wanting a more comfortable/clean environment to work out in. The staff knows every face that walks in the door and is well versed in all levels of fitness. The classes they offer are great and the instructors are always making the work out fun no matter how daunting the exercises may seem. From bootcamp to running on the treadmill, at Kentfield fitness you are not just a client, but a friend.
“Two years ago, I decided to lose weight (6’ tall, 235 lbs., 46 years old), and I did pretty well but hit a “plateau” about 15 lbs. away from my goal. I was also having some pretty bad back problems, stemming from some injuries that hadn’t healed correctly and the sedentary nature of my job. Six months ago, I scoured Yelp for local gyms, visited a few and decided Kentfield Fitness had the right combination of low key atmosphere, short (or nonexistent) wait times for equipment and a nice combination of polite clientele without a social scene. I called and told Chris Barry that I wanted to lose a few pounds, of course, but I had some mobility and pain issues I was trying to overcome and he paired me with Christine Hallinan, which was brilliant.
Since working with Christine, I’ve lost 3 pounds beyond my goal, I’ve gained mobility and much of my chronic pain is gone. Christine pushes hard but is also sensitive to the nature of injuries and the result of inadequate self care. She’s fun to work with but also disciplined, focused and highly skilled. Her ability to see what’s wrong with you, just by the way you walk is almost uncanny. At one point, I hurt my back at home by lifting something wrong and Christine helped me strengthen and heal through the injury but also taught me how to move in a way to prevent future injury. I still have work to do to strengthen and improve and I’m looking forward to working with Christine for the foreseeable future. I enthusiastically recommend her without hesitation; she keeps things interesting with new workouts, responds to feedback, asks a lot of questions and has the skills to know how to give you the workouts you need. I ask her to video record some of my exercises so I’m sure to do them correctly when I’m working by myself. I still find I need her to correct my form and keep me from hurting myself and to help me solve challenges as they come up. You will get your money’s worth and then some, if you work with her.
As to Kentfield Fitness, the Yelp reviews that said it was a clean, low key gym with almost no wait times for equipment has proven true. It’s a little out of the way for me but that’s okay too, since my work is pretty intense sometimes and it’s nice to get away from it all for some “me” time. The members are nice but focused on their own work which makes for a nice balance between friendly and intrusive. There are clearly members who have formed friendships but there’s no sense that one must absolutely be part of a clique. There’s no narcissists preening, no gaggles of dudes dominating the equipment and no kids hanging out on the equipment while their parents work out. There’s a TV, but thankfully the sound is usually off or very low. I never have to wait for equipment; it’s always in good shape and clean. There are disinfectant spray bottles throughout the gym and members are pretty good about cleaning up after themselves. All in all, I’m very happy here. It’s not a pickup joint, not a social scene; just a gym with nice staff, nice clientele of all ages, shapes and sizes with a friendly, low key atmosphere.”
As I explained when I came to you the first time my fitness goals
were very simple –
1. lose the last 20# on my South Beach diet (I’d been stuck for 3 months)
2. lose inches on my gut so I could see my toes in the shower
You suggested regular exercise to “chip away” at the pounds and inches with regular exercise
I’m up to 5.5 miles on the treadmill/stairmaster/cross-trainer with M/W/F work.
You recommended Aruna as a Personal Trainer. I do Tuesday with her and Thursday on my own.
Since November 1 I have:
* lost the 2.5 I needed to get back to a healthy BMI
* lost the first 5# against my 20# goal on Friday, 20 Nov
I really look forward to a couple of hours at Kentfield Fitness every day.
I even came in once this past weekend!
I appreciate listening to “my” kind of music on the sound system
and mixing up watching CNN, KQED, ESPN and the Food Channel on the TVs.
I’ve met some nice people as well. I appreciate Gynelle’s warm “good morning” every day.
And I’m less than 5 minutes from my home in Ross. Now if I could only convince myself to BIKE this route rather than drive…

Before joining Kentfield Fitness I had joined and tested out many other gyms in the area, none compare. Kentfield Fitness takes pride in their clients, the staff greets every client when coming in the door, they are always willing to help when you have a question or need to learn how to use a piece of the equipment and help if you have questions or need direction with your workout routine. Kentfield Fitness is the cleanest gym I have ever been a member of and all of the clients seem to take pride in the cleanliness as well. There are a plethora of machines, weights and classes available to help you accomplish your goals. I have personally gone down 3 pant sizes since joining and am happier than I have ever been physically and emotionally. If you are looking for a friendly, clean and client inspired gym, this place ROCKS!!!

I am so glad that you’ve added Angelica back into the Kentfield Fitness fold! I signed up for my very first yoga class with Angelica on Wednesdays and I’m now totally hooked on her Gentle Flow Yoga. Angelica’s teaching style is simple and concise – it’s perfect for yoga newbies like my bride and myself. Angelica combines strong body awareness and a caring heart to provide little tweaks to a pose if she sees it’s going to cause a problem for me because of arthritis or old surgery issues. Angelica’s bio on the KF website prompted me to get a massage after today’s yoga class. It was a great Christmas present after all the kids and grand kids had left for their own homes. Now if you could only get Angelica to add another class on Sunday mornings I could get my visits to Kentfield Fitness up to 6 a week (Monday and Fridays are strength training, Tuesdays and Thursday are cardio, and Wednesdays are Angelica’s yoga class.)
